Most butterflies travel, flying long distances. Butterfly images are a common decorative motif by many people because of their beautifully colored wings and markings. Butterflies usually have a short life span. In their adult life stage, when they are an actual butterfly, as opposed to  being an egg, larvae or pupa, can live from a week to nearly a year depending on the species.

Some  butterfly species are considered pests because in their larval stages (meaning, when they are caterpillars) they can damage crops and vegetation; however, some species are useful for gardening in that they assist in pollination.  Likewise, some caterpillars eat harmful insects.

Interesting butterfly fact: The earliest known butterfly fossils date back somewhere around 40–50 million years ago!
